A Field-station is a site to re-imagine, (re)make and (re)construct pathways to regenerative futures. Its catalytic impact depends on breaking and redirecting ‘feedback loops of disempowerment’, where the evidence of planetary system breakdown becomes such a burden that it leads whole cohorts of citizens to abandon hope, to anticipate ‘the inescapable end of nature’.
Research has charted a worldwide emergence of mental states labelled variously as eco-anxiety, eco-cynicism, and (directionless) eco-rage. Together, these are signs of a resignation of social agency, of internalised ‘futures-dissonance’ – where the futures that people desire appear to be diverging inexorably from the futures they expect to encounter.
